Wearable tech that calls an ambulance in an emergency

A team of researchers from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is developing a wearable technology that monitors the health status of older people.
Working with the Department of Geriatrics at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), KTU is developing a multi-sensor and controller system that automatically calls emergency services whenever a user needs help.

“Thanks to this system, older people can feel at home in peace and security. They do not need constant monitoring. The developed technology is well suited for clinical treatment, and can also be implemented in various geriatric institutions, ”says Egidijus Kazanavičius, professor of computer science at KTU, one of the authors of the technology.

The system consists of stationary sensors installed indoors and a small wearable device 3-5 cm high. The system constantly monitors the state of health and the position of the human body. When it is discovered that a person may have crashed, the system sends a signal to those who are listed as emergency contacts.

“We strove to create a system that would record the position of the patient, body position and movement in the room. If something goes wrong, a person falls or some other problem occurs, the controller will record the patient’s collapse and the alarm will be automatically transmitted, ”explains Professor Kazanevicius, director of the KTU Real-time Computer Systems Center.

“Internet access is required, but not required. Emergency calls and notifications can also be sent via GSM, ”says Professor Kazanavičius.

“For example, if a person shows with his hand on which he or she wears a controller bracelet, in most cases this gesture will be recorded as a failure. Or, for example, when a person climbs a ladder, algorithms define each step as a fall. We worked diligently to avoid such misunderstandings, ”says Professor Kazanevičius.
